Sue Maskaleris

(Susan Corinne), composer, lyricist, pianist, singer, producer, violinist, educator, bassist, guitarist; b. Montclair, NJ, 23 December 1957. At three, her family moved to Short Hills, NJ with her sister Carol (b. 1956, now Carol Ball). She studied piano from age four, violin from age eight, inspired by fathers love for jazz and his former career as bassist in big bands (Stephen N. Maskaleris, Esq.). She took summer session at Berklee School of Music in 1972. She did her undergraduate studies at Manhattan School of Music as composition major from 1975-77, private student of John Corigliano. She also had one semester of liberal arts at New York University, and later a graduate film-scoring class and ASCAP filmscoring seminar there in 2001. She took voice lessons with Carmine Gaggliardi and others, piano with Andy LaVerne, Hal Galper, Armen Donellian, and Norman Simmons. She performed as a pianist, singer and bandleader since 1975, throughout NYC metropolitan area and also abroad throughout Sweden in 1984 and in Berne, Switzerland in 1991, and on 13 ships throughout the world since 1981. She placed 2nd in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Composition Competition for "Scat!" and won First Prize in the Billboard Song Contest, world category, in for "No, But I Wish...", both in 1998. Her instrumental "Pajamasamba" was a winner in JAZZIZ magazines first nationwide talent search, "Keyboards on Fire!" judged by Dave Brubeck and Bob James. She won twelve Popular Awards from ASCAP, and numerous Honorable Mentions from Billboard Song Contests and other contests. She was a quarter-finalist in the American Song Festival, 1982. Her groups have performed at the JVC Jazz Festival, the Kool Jazz Festival, the Womens Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center, NYC, and the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC. Her original groups have played at NYC jazz clubs The Blue Note, Iridium, Birdland and many others. Her trio played at Hannahs East and Adagio, in Savannah, GA. She has appeared solo or duo in NYC at: The Rainbow Grill, St. Peters, Birdland, Iridium, The Knickerbocker, The Village Gate, Fat Tuesdays, Visiones, The Squire and many others. She has accompanied legendary singers Annie Ross, Abbey Lincoln; worked, performed or recorded with Don Elliot, Wayne Andre, Jed Levy, Ralph LaLama, LeRoy Jenkins,Michal Urbaniak, Marc Ribot, Roy Nathanson, Harvie Swartz, Mike Richmond, Michael Formanek, Kenwood DeNard, Akira Tana, Jimmy Madison, Frank Gant, Portinho, Maucha Adnet and many more. Her songs have been performed by Bob Dorough, Danilo Perez, Roger Kellaway, Harold Danko, Bill Watrous, Gail Wynters, Judy Niemack, Adela Dalto and Cybill Shepherd. Shes been on the faculty of H.B. Studio, NYC, since 2001.
