Soul Shoes (Explicit)
Phrases such as “walk a mile in my shoes” or “the shoe is on the other foot” suggest that the shoe is an archetype for one’s point of view, or even simply the idea of self and all that it implies. If we use “shoes” as symbols of who we are, or how we feel, we can determine that wearing different “shoes” means occupying different states of mind and/or assuming different ideals of ones self. Wearing your “soul shoes” means you are being yourself. It means being the most sincere form of oneself. This album is the musical representation of Willis wearing his “soul shoes”, meaning everything is out in the open and on the table. In the title track, Willis says “take me on a walk in the dark and i’ll be okay ‘cuz I got my soul shoes on.” A “walk in the dark” signifies journeying through life’s darker, more depressing moments and having confidence in being able to make it out okay by simply being yourself, staying humble, and remaining teachable.
